I was recently hired by Levi-Strauss to photograph their Harvey Milk Day “milk & cookies event” at the Castro Street location. Harvey’s Levis were loaned to the store from the San Francisco historical society for the event. While I was there someone asked me if I had seen Harvey’s jeans yet. I had already photographed them from the front. I turned to looked and saw mannequin ass cheeks sticking out the back. “Were they ass-less?” I think the Levis representative noticed the same thing I did. She told me they were too small to fit on the mannequin so they attached them to the front. Boy, what a relief.
Harvey Milk's jeans were loaned by the GLBT Historical Society of San Francisco, which maintains many Milk artifacts in its archival collection.
